Looking to Reduce Invisalign Pain? Try These 7 Effective Tips

Traditional teeth-straightening methods have evolved significantly to become more convenient, aesthetically appealing, and comfortable. A perfect example is the Invisalign aligners

Invisalign is changing the face of orthodontics. They are one of the best orthodontic treatment options for correcting misaligned bites or malocclusion. These clear plastic aligners are removable, virtually invisible, and require fewer adjustments. They are customized to fit snugly in your mouth for maximum comfort. However, as it is with all orthodontic treatments, experiencing slight pain and discomfort is inevitable. Invisalign treatment can also cause slight pain or tenderness until your mouth gets used to them. But you need not worry. These 7 tips can help you reduce the pain of Invisalign treatment. Take a look:

1.Watch What You Eat – Avoid hard and crunchy foods. Ditch foods like hard candies, caramel, raw vegetables, etc. Choose soft foods that require minimal effort while chewing. Prefer foods like smoothies, yogurt, cheese, leafy greens, etc.

2.Apply Cold Compress – Place ice in a plastic bag and seal it. Wrap it in a thin cloth. Use this cold compress on the affected area for a maximum of ten minutes at a stretch. Repeat this process two to three times a day. You can also purchase a cold pack at your pharmacy or online.

3.Prevent Mouth Sores with Dental Wax – When you start using aligners, your tongue and insides of your cheeks may get irritated. This can sometimes result in mouth sores. Dental wax is the safest option to prevent mouth sores and further infection. You can also ask your orthodontist to smooth out any rough edges of the aligners.

4.Don’t Remove Your Aligners Frequently – Even though Invisalign aligners offer the flexibility to remove them at will, they should be worn for at least 22 hours a day for desired results. Also, if you don’t wear them for too long, they tend to become tighter when you re-insert them. This leads to unnecessary discomfort and may even cause pain.

5.Use Aligner Retrieval Tools – Pain of Invisalign trays is often experienced while wearing or removing them. There are specially designed tools available that make the process of wearing and removing these aligners easy. Ask your orthodontist about such tools if you are experiencing any discomfort or tenderness while wearing or removing your Invisalign aligners.

6.Replace Aligner Trays Before Bedtime – You are more likely to experience discomfort or pain while replacing old aligner trays with new ones. If you replace your old aligner trays an hour or two before bedtime, you get enough time to get adjusted to your new aligners before you go to sleep. This way, you might be able to avoid the pain and the discomfort that is often experienced while wearing new aligner trays.

7.Consider OTC Pain Medications – If the pain or discomfort persists for long, you can also take over-the-counter pain medications after consulting your orthodontist.

The slight tenderness or pain of Invisalign treatment can be easily managed and hence can be overlooked when compared to the benefits it offers. Ask your orthodontist about how Invisalign aligners can give you a perfect smile without compromising on your comfort, appearance, or convenience.
